Exploring the world of ants can be a time-consuming task! Some first and second grade students in Mrs. Goodrich's reading class discovered this as they learned more about these tiny creatures.

Exploring the World of Ants

by Pam Goodrich

What do ants like to eat? How far will they travel to locate food? What other insects might eat the same kinds of foods?  These were some of the questions the students asked as they learned more about ants and their habits. The children tried to answer some of these questions with an experiment. A paper plate with 4 different kinds of food was placed outdoors beneath a large pine tree. The students selected apple slices, lettuce, corn chips, and oatmeal and tried to guess which would be the most popular meal.  Everyone was surprised to find that oatmeal was the favorite followed closely by apples and corn chips. Actually, the corn chips disappeared completely by the second day. The students decided that perhaps a squirrel had grabbed those instead of the ants. Other insects dining were spiders, flies and beetles.
