What happens when you mix Mentos and Pop together?

by Michael Sybrant and Alison Winter

This is the question the third and fourth graders of Bennet Elementary found out about on Friday, April 25th.  They heard that if you mix mentos and soda pop together it causes a big reaction.  So, they decided to try it out!  First each group chose which pop they would use, what kind of mentos, and how big of hole in the cap.

The classes had a selection of diet coke, coke, diet pepsi, and sprite to choose from.  They also could choose cinnamon mentos or regular mentos and then how many they wanted to use.  Finally, they chose a small-sized hole in the cap, medium sized, or no cap at all.  What were the results?  The third and fourth grade concluded to get the highest spray they used diet coke, three white mentos, and a small-sized hole in the cap.  We had a great time experimenting!  Next time your drinking a pop, make sure you don't stick a mentos in your mouth.  Click on the link below for more pictures.
