Second Graders in the Great Mail Race
by Florene Schauer & Liz Bogen
Our 2nd Grade Classes are participating in the Great Mail Race. The idea is to write to a 2nd grade class in each state so that you can learn about other classes and their states. We developed a questionnaire to send along with our letters. We also included a picture of our classes. Each second grade student was assigned at least one state. This was great practice for letter writing skills and addressing envelopes. Needless to say, this was an excellent Geography lesson as well. A United States map is now being used to track where our letters have gone and which states have responded.
Schools were selected to correspond to the names of students, the names of our school district's towns, the state capital, or a school of comparable size.
Second grade students took a mini-field trip to the Bennet Post Office. Beverly selected the Gerald Ford stamp to represent our state since Gerald Ford was a former president born in Omaha. Each student then stamped and mailed his/her letters.
We have already received a response from the second grade class of Bennett Elementary School in Bennett, Iowa. Students are anxious to watch the adding of yellow triangles to represent these responses.
