6th Graders Take a Trip
Lois Linke & Lonnie Goodrich
Students lurk in the darkness. Shadows appear on walls. Mirrors reflect images within images. Hair stands on end. Objects appear to freeze in motion.
Though this sounds like scenes from a horror movie, the statements actually describe what 6th grade students experienced on their field trip to Edgerton Explorit Center in Aurora, Nebraska.
Edgerton Explorit Center is an interactive hands-on science museum. It was built upon the legacy of Dr. Harold Edgerton, a native of Aurora, who studied electrical engineering and invented the strobe light. Flashes on cameras, blinking lights on top of communication towers, and emergency vehicle lights are just some of the inventions from which we benefit, thanks to Dr. Edgerton.
While at the museum, 6th graders had the opportunity to “learn by doing” in the Explorit Zone. They also participated in demonstration sessions titled “Sparks” and “Stopping Time.” All students went away charged with new enthusiasm about science.
