Beautiful Butterflies

by Gail Prokop

February 16, 2010

B week has been a busy time in Kindergarten.  We talked about everything from big barns, bouncing babies, broken bats, bad bananas and blue balloons to bonging bells, bragging brothers and billions of body parts.  But our focus for today is the beautiful butterfly!

Did you know that there are over 100,000 different kinds of butterflies and they are found on every continent in the world?  Their life cycle is fascinating.  It starts as a small, hungry caterpillar.  Then it becomes a chrysalis, which spends much time growing.  Finally, it is ready to enter the world as a beautiful butterfly!  As we looked at pictures of them we noticed they are symmetrical.  That means there is a mirror image from one wing to the other or you could say they are exactly the same just flip-flopped.

We decided we should try to create our own butterflies and make their wings flip-flop to make a perfectly symmetrical butterfly.  This is the way we did it:

  1. Fold a big piece of paper in half and draw a funny shaped B on one side.
  2. Cut out the B while holding the fold closed.
  3. Open it up to see a big butterfly shape.
  4. Squirt your favorite colors of paint on your butterfly.
  5. Fold it in half again and press the paint out.  (wash hands here)
  6. Open it up to see your beautiful, symmetrical butterfly and let it dry.
  7. Glue on a body and you’re finished!

Saleta attaches her body to the wings.

I think we did it.  What do you think?
