Seniors Write the History

by Mark Kotik

May 17, 2010

History is so often read in books and seen on television that we often forget where it really comes from. To get the story we need to ask questions of the people who lived the experience. Too often we are regulated to what the "experts" want us to read and do not go out to discover it on our own. The Senior class had to do just that.

Each student is asked to choose a topic that occurred before their time and interview a person that does not live within their household about that topic. The students then go out and have an enlightening conversation with a grandparent, an aunt or uncle, maybe an older sibling, a teacher or best friend's parent about anything ranging from what their childhood was like, war time or military experiences, tragic, disastrous and frightful events.

Each student conducts an interview with a person of their choice on their topic of interest in a time span of about 30 to 120 minutes. This experience gives the student and the interviewee an entirely new perspective on history, conversation and human interaction. There are many quality papers to display but I have chosen two that well depict this skill.

Please take the time to enjoy the interviews conducted by Kati Jo Backer and Dessire Knorr.Just click on the student name.
