The bike corral. Our bikes are kept safe and secure here.
The start of the great adventure.
One of the magnificant views we had in the morning.
Our second rest stop when we arrived.
The same stop five minutes after we got there. It was like a swarm of locusts attacking the food stands.
A great view on the way up McClure Pass. One of many stops we made to catch our wind.

Glenwood Springs to Hotchkiss

Day one of RTR is in the books.  Mr. McChristian and I completed the 82 mile route from Glenwood Springs to Hotchkiss in just over  seven hours.  Our time on bike was 5 hrs 35 minutes.  We averaged just under 15 miles/hour.  The high light of the day was the views of the snow capped peaks and high mountain streams.  The scenery was spectacular.  The hardest part of the ride today was the climb up McClure Pass.  4 miles of 7 – 9 % grades made it a challenge beyond what we thought.  After many stops to recover our breath, we finally reached the aid station at the top of the pass!  The rest of the trip was mostly down hill along the roads to Hotchkiss.

Tomorrow, we have another long day ahead of us with an 80-mile ride from Hotchkiss to Gunnison.  We have no big mountain passes to get over this time, so I’m sure our weary legs will appreciate the easier terrain.

Mr. Robb is bone tired and ready for a nap.  He needs to get rested up for tomorrow.
