Does the beginning of my story get my reader’s attention?

Does my writing follow a good sequence? Do I have a beginning, middle, and ending to my story? These are the types of questions the students are going to ask themselves when writing a story. We have been working on the organization of our writing this week in Miss Winter’s 3rd grade class. In order to learn how to organize their writing, the class has discussed different graphic organizers and how to use them. We also have been focusing on using different transition words when we are starting a new paragraph.

One of our projects this week was using picture books to help us understand organization. Each group was assigned a picture book. They read the book in their groups and talked about the sequence of the events in the story. Each student in the group was to draw 2 pictures from the story. One student focused on the beginning, two students worked on the middle pieces, and one student focused on the end of the book. On the second day, the groups swapped drawings. They were to then clothes pin the pictures up in the order of the story. Each group got to walk us though their beginning, middle, and end of the story.
