Scholarships for Any College

 

This Scholarship List is organized by the month the Scholarship is due. These scholarships are good for any college the student wishes to attend. Unless otherwise specified applications and additional information may be found in the Scholarship File outside the Counselor’s Office. Please also check the Need a Lift book of scholarships published by the American Legion in the front of the scholarship file or go online at www.needalift.org

 

No Deadline

 

Nebraska Legislature Access College Early Scholarship Program: This scholarship will pay tuition and mandatory fee costs of a high school student who wishes to take a dual enrollment or early admit (concurrent) class at a Nebraska college or university.  To qualify, a high school student or that student’s parents/guardians would have had to experienced an extreme hardship (fire, loss of job, accident, etc.) or currently be eligible for one of the federal benefit programs: food stamps, free or reduced price lunches, Supplemental Security Income (SSI), Special Supplemental Nutrition Program (WIC), or Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF).  Applications are available in the Scholarship File.  For more information see Ms. Merryman or email Ritchie.Morrow@cppe.ne.gov.

 

*Nebraska Education Assistance Programs: The State of Nebraska offers two programs that assist with the costs of tuition related to a college education.  These benefits are administered by the Nebraska Department of Veterans Affairs and can be utilized alone or in combination with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Education Programs.

1.  Waiver of Tuition Program – available to eligible dependents, spouses, or widows/widowers who have a qualified service related  disability or are a casualty of military service.

2.  Reservist Credit Program – provides a credit of fifty percent of the tuition charges for eligible enlisted members of Nebraska-based units of the Active Reserve of the Armed Forces of the United States

The Heartland Latino Leadership Conference Scholarship – Ten $1000 scholarships to pursue a college education in the state of Nebraska.  Eligibility requirements:  must be of Latino/Hispanic heritage who is a graduating senior in 2010-11 academic year.  Applications may be found online at www.heartlandlatino.org or check the scholarship file for an application.  Amount is $1000. Deadline is September 24, 2010.  

 

Due in October

 

Wendy’s High School Heisman – This program honors high school students who excel in academics, athletics, and student leadership. To apply students must be seniors with a B average and participate in at least one school-sponsored sport.   Apply at www.wendysheisman.com.  Deadline is October 3.   The award is the honor of being chosen for a prestigious award and possibly a  Wendy’s gift  card ranging from $5 to $50.  If at least 5 PHS students submit applications, our school can qualify for a $500 donation.

 

The American Legion High School Oratorical Scholarship Program, “A Constitutional Speech Contest” – The purpose of the program is to develop a deeper knowledge and appreciation of the Constitution of the United States on the part of high school students.  There is a prepared oration of original effort for 8 to 10 minutes on some aspect of the Constitution and an assigned topic discourse of 3 to 5 minutes covering Amendment 8, 10, 26 or 27.  National   winners receive $14,000 - $18,000.  State winners receive $1500.  Local contests will be held in October.  For more information, please see Ms. Merryman.

 

Aksarben Horatio Alger Scholarship – Applicants must be a graduating senior who intends to pursue a bachelor’s degree at an accredited institution (students may start at a two-year college and then transfer to a four-year).  There should be critical financial need, involvement in co-curricular and community service activities and a minimum 2.0 GPA.  Award amount varies from $2500 to $20,000.  Apply online at www.horatioalger.com/scholarshipsDeadline is October 30.

Due in November

 

VFW Voice of Democracy Scholarship Competition – Open to students in grades 9-12.  Students compete by writing and recording a broadcast script on a patriotic theme.  This year’s theme is Does My Generation Have a Role in America’s Future?.  The student must record an original 3-5 minute essay on a standard cassette tape or CD.  The entry must be submitted to the local Post no later than November 1, 2010.  The National Prize is worth up to $30,000.  See Ms. Merryman for more information.

 

Prudential Spirit of Community Awards – Grades 5-12 may apply. If you have made a difference through volunteering over the past year, you could win $1000 and a trip to Washington, D.C. next spring.  Apply online at http://spirit.prudential.com or www.principals.org/spirit.  Amount is $1000 + a trip to Washington, D.C.  Deadline is November 1 for all materials to be in and all steps of application must be complete.  See Ms. Merryman for details.

Due in February

 

SCC Scholarships for High School Seniors –applicants must be graduating seniors who plan to attend Southeast Community College.  Preference will be given to students who rank in the top one-half of their graduating class.  Apply online at https://scc.scholarships.ngwebsolutions.com.  A copy of his/her transcript must be submitted.  Open period to apply Dec. 1, 2010 through Feb. 22, 2011.  Awards vary and are applied toward the cost of tuition.

Due in April

Community Memorial Hospital Auxiliary Scholarship – Applicants must be seniors who attend Palmyra, Syracuse or live in the Community Memorial Hospital District (Otoe County West of 40th Road) and be entering a medical field of study.  You must provide a transcript, resume with school activities and complete the application form completely including the essay and sign.

Deadline is April 1, but applications will be accepted now.  The award is $500.
