Bennet Elementary Cares project
This year for the 2014-15 Bennet Elementary Caring Team Project we selected a wonderful fundraiser. We wanted to help our families from the Palmyra/Bennet/Douglas area. We chose the Bennet Backpack program for families that need some assistance in providing healthy and nutritional food choices for their kids.
The backpack program serves families from District OR1 Schools. Families receive a backpack of food with menus that include canned goods, dried goods, eggs and bread vouchers. Milk vouchers and fresh fruit are added to the backpacks and are an additional cost. The Bennet Community Church helps with storage and organization of the foods and backpacks. The Bennet Caring Team, 6th graders Taya Ptacnik and Gwen Leuschen, wanted to help with the fresh fruit funds for next year. It costs a little over $400 for just the fresh fruit.
This fundraiser was donations only. The Bennet Cares Student Team set some goals and a few fun ideas for the students. They picked a whole school PJ day when we reached $100 and a whole school Spelling Free week when we reached $300. Those two goals were meet on the 2nd day of collecting donations! By the end of the week, we received over $1900 in donations from our Bennet Elementary families! Not only were we able to pay for all fresh fruit but also the milk vouchers for each family.
This project is important to our students. It gives them an activity to plan and goals to set. It shows that that we can come together as a large group and make a difference in the life of others. Pictured is the 5th grade class that raised $488. 27, which was the school high. They were rewarded with a cookie and ice cream party.
