Life Skills Curriculum
This year the high school life skills class was very fortunate to gain a new curriculum called Unique Learning Systems. The program was created by N2Y (News-2-You) a company that produces a weekly, online newspaper adapted for students with reading, writing and comprehension difficulties. The Unique Learning System has a variety of materials, instructional strategies, and visuals that it offers to assist in reaching all types of learning styles.
One of the great aspects of this curriculum is that you can create a profile for each student participating in the course. Once a profile is created you are able to then assess each student based on their abilities, needs, and preferences. After doing this the system is designed to place students on a level of learning that best fits what they need. It also allows the teacher to track skills and benchmarks that are specific to the individual student.
Every month Unique Learning publishes new lesson plans for reading, writing, math, and more! There is a new theme that coincides with all the lessons and is discussed within each activity. The lessons are designed to meet the needs of the students at each level. Since each student has their own profile you are also able to create a username and password making it possible for the students to access all the content online. All of the lessons and activities include symbol supports, pictures, and words and passages that can be read at the click of a button.
This curriculum has given students who normally shy away from taking chances more confidence than ever. They have a renewed love for learning and strive daily to do their best. It has also given them independence and responsibility for their assignments and projects that have allowed each student to shine in his or her own way.
