Legends Explained

Spanish IV dives into Literature Via Legends

As students progress in a language they find out so much about their own cultures and even their own English language as we explore.  We are currently focusing on legends and how those of the Spanish-speaking culture are very similar, yet very different.  There is a boogie man, it's true! He rides through towns in his squeaky cart. There also exists a woman who continually cries for her long-lost love of a soldier.  Did you know that the quetzal bird was actually a man and the volcanos outside of Mexico City, were once a couple of teenagers in love?

And along with folklore/legends, students have also discussed the Nazca crop circles/paths.  Who exactly made them; we are not sure.  Aliens, the ancient Nazca indians, perhaps?  Decide for yourself and visit a few sites below.  As for the symbols, we see in the Aztec and Mayan cultures, these have a nice review and one that students have adapted to fit today's culture.  Do we have symbols in our own culture?  Absolutely!  A stop light.  A heart.  Even a black cat is a symbol.  See What Spanish III student developed for:  bad luck, illness, bad weather, good weather, love and health.
