Character Education in Bennet
The elementary and junior high schools have kicked off a new character education program,
Second Step. The Second Step program is: A universal prevention program. The Second Step
program is designed to increase students’ school success and decrease problem behaviors by
promoting social-emotional competence and self-regulation.
Research-based. The skills and concepts addressed in the Second Step program are based on
research that connects the development of social-emotional competence and self-regulation skills
to success in school and life.
Developmental and sequential. To better meet the developmental needs of students, the grade
levels in the new program are paired. The lessons in each grade are unique, but the two grades in
each pair have a similar format and progression of skills and concepts. Skills and concepts are
also developed sequentially across all grade levels.
Designed to reinforce skills. The program includes both structured and informal ways for
students to practice and apply skills and concepts outside of lessons.
Based on best practices for teaching elementary and junior high school students.
The program teaches skills in the following four areas:
1. Skills for Learning: Students gain skills to help themselves learn, including how to focus their
attention, listen carefully, use self-talk to stay on task, and be assertive when asking for help with
2. Empathy: Students learn to identify and understand their own and others’ feelings. Students
also learn how to take another’s perspective and how to show compassion.
3. Emotion Management: Students learn specific skills for calming down when experiencing
strong feelings, such as anxiety or anger.
4. Problem Solving: Students learn a process for solving problems with others in a positive way.
Throughout the year, your child will be bringing home Home Links that go with several of the
Second Step lessons. Home Links are simple, fun activities for you and your child to complete
together. They provide students with further exploration of lesson skills and concepts and
familiarize adults with what students are learning.
Parents and caregivers may join Committee for Children’s online community. As members of
this community, you can get Second Step program resources and information, including
supplemental activities and videos. In addition, you will be able to connect with other parents
and caregivers whose children are also participating in Second Step lessons
