Annual UNL Foreign Language Fair Competition Results

Each year the University of Nebraska – Lincoln hots their annual Foreign Language Fair.  The Department of Modern Languages and Literatures at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln hosted its 35th annual Modern Language Fair from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on April 5. Organizers said they expected record numbers of Nebraska high school students and teachers to attend.  In fact 19 students from Palmyra High School and 1200 additional students made the journey.  The Modern Language Fair provided an opportunity for high school students from across the state studying Chinese, French, German, Japanese, Russian and Spanish to demonstrate their acquisition of language and culture in various competitive events, including writing and acting out a dramatic scene, performing music or dance, and reciting poetry. Faculty and graduate students of the UNL Department of Modern Languages and Literatures judged the events.  In addition, departmental personnel will offer mini-lessons in a variety of languages, including Arabic, Chinese, Czech, Japanese, Russian and Swahili.

Palmyra students fared extremely well.  Our Salsa dance group:  Kacie Giesman, Kara Williams, Ashley Vlcek, Kelby Phellps, Sam Masilko, and Brittany Schroder earned a blue or superior rating, the drama group  consisting of:  Brandy Focken, Austin Jones, Jared Brinkman, Trent McPherrin, Theron Pietzyk, and Casey Higgins also earned the same (a blue).  All of those in poetry (Emilie Hicks, Darrian Petzen, Holly Hanau, and Makenzie Reynoldson) and earned excellent ratings or red ribbons for their efforts.  We also entered a poster contest with a theme based on Global Cuisine.  Derek Jones earned a blue and Stephanie Vaughn and Karey Newton earned a red for Spanish levels 1 and 2.  Sam Masilko, Holly Mach and Kerry Dawson earned a blue and Casey Higgins also earned a blue in Spanish III and IV.

To conclude the day, UNL judges also announced overall winners in each language for each level of study/participation.  This year there with over 1200 students in attendance, all students were judged only as participants (not in school size, ie:  Class A, B, C. D).  In the poster division, Derek Jones was awarded second place or "Honorable Mention" over all and he received a special ribbon.  Also, Casey Higgins won first place in his level and will receive a medal and a trophy for the school.  In the same category as Casey, Sam Masilko, Kerry Dawson, and Holly Mach brought home the Honorable Mention", also earning another ribbon.  They really had an outstanding year this year at UNL.
